Merritt C. Becker, Jr. Maritime and Intermodal Transportation Center (MITC)

            James R. Amdal, Director
Dr. John L. Renne, Associate Director

OVERVIEW:

The MITC is focused on maritime and intermodal transportation projects and programs affecting New Orleans, the greater metropolitan region, as well as the state and the Gulf Coast region. In addition, MITC has undertaken numerous maritime research projects that focus on transportation related issues that affect commerce and economic development in Louisiana. Staff members associated with MITC continue to contribute to projects in association, where appropriate, with the staff of UNO's National Ports and Waterways Institute (NPWI), as well as faculty and staff performing transportation research as part of ongoing activities within the School of Urban Planning and Regional Studies (SUPRS) at UNO. Specific areas of collaboration involve passenger and freight intermodal transportation, emergency evacuation, transit-oriented development, alternative transportation as well as transport systems planning and implementation.  Recently, in partnership with LSU's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering , UNO has received a federal designation as a Tier II University Transportation Center. This designation will enable UNO to expand its research activities into areas of disaster evacuation, recovery, and resilient transportation systems: topics of critical importance to the region and nation as they plan and respond to natural and manmade disasters.
