Welcome to the Beacon of Hope/University of New Orleans Community Recovery Project.
The Beacon of Hope-University of New Orleans Community Recovery Project (BUCRP) was borne to organiz
e, support and document the creation of a Beacon GIS that allows flexibility in data collection, maintenance, mapping and analysis across multiple platforms using a variety of public and private data sources.
An important aspect of this is the ability for residents and other community based organizations to learn how to create and maintain the data with, or without, direct assistance from Beacon staff. There will be additional online documents to support the training and site maintenance.
GIS and Map Production
The Beacon of Hope Resource Center has developed a property condition survey that has been collected by Gentilly residents on the parcel level. Staff at the Beacon has standardized the s
urvey so that City of New Orleans community members will receive the same training and collect neighborhood conditions data in the same format. This data tracks the progress of the neighborhood since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita (2005). In order to extend access of this data to neighborhood groups, the Beacon of Hope Resource Center created a centralized data file and began to create a web-enabled repository, Smart Tech. The data viewer will allow residents to view prior survey results and, with a secure log-in, update survey data from remote locations. Typically the frequency of the community survey is based upon a 3-month cycle.
